Dr. Gerry Barrett/DAPEI Legacy Fund

Dr. Gerald Barrett was a long time member of the DAPEI who served as the Executive Director for many years as well as serving on many national committees. Following his passing, Dr. Brian Barrett, his son, established the Dr. Gerry Barrett/DAPEI Endowment to encourage dental students at Dalhousie University Dental School and provide funding for deserving patients of PEI dentists in need of extensive dental treatment due to accidents or disease that they are unable to afford. Over the years the fund has grown through donations from the DAPEI and individuals to over $250,000 and will be able to continue for many years going forward.

Applications for assistance through this fund need to be done through your family dentist as they would know the details of the situation in regards to the oral health history and financial needs.

2023 Recipient of the The Dr. Gerry Barrett DAPEI Legacy Fund Scholarship

Dear Dental Association of PEI,

I wanted to extend my appreciation and thanks for your donation of the Dr. Gerry Barrett Dental Association of PEI Legacy Fund Award.

I am a third-year dental student from Little Pond, PEI. I plan on returning to eastern PEI to practise dentistry after my completion of the DDS program here at Dalhousie. The support you have provided with this award means a lot to me to be recognized, for my academic and extra-curricular activities, as one of the few Islanders currently attending Dalhousie Dentistry.

Receiving this award helps me to focus more on my education and relieves some of the financial burden that comes with it. When I begin practising, I hope to also make donations towards future awards for students here at Dalhousie Dental as you generously have.

With sincere thanks,
Brailyne Headrick
